Rutgers Rutgers Rutgers. I’m just frustrated because it feels like we are wasting this great offense. This year’s O and last year’s D wins 9/10 games, and we are sitting at 3-3 with games vs #3 Oregon, and Penn State, and at #1 Ohio State and #17 Illinois. Basically, this is a must win game for the season to be remembered in a positive light. And alllllll they have to do is fly 3000 miles to take on the electric Demond Williams and a very strong Washington team. I’ll take the combo of Athan and Strong over so many teams in America, but as a whole I’m not sure Rutgers has the guys to win in Seattle. I think it’ll be close, but with the weak defense, and all of a sudden leaky kicker, I have a hard time imagining a win. For the rest of the season I am going to appreciate Ian Strong who will be an NFL receiver, and Athan who is an average Big Ten QB, which is great for our standards. Them two mixed with our run game can put up the points to upset teams, and if there’s ever an upset we need it Friday (K)night!
Pitt +10.5 at Florida State
FSU set the world on fire beating Alabama week 1 but is now 0-2 in ACC play. Their QB is electric but in three FBS games he’s thrown for 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Pitt has a weak secondary so Tommy might be able to sling it but he’s a disaster waiting to happen. Where Pitt gets you is their run defense which is a top unit in the country. I think that’ll be key for Pitt to keep it close, make FSU beat you through the air, make them make a mistake. Pitt will start a true frosh QB, who lit up Boston College last week in his first start. FSU is a different breed, but he threw for 300 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Their starter before Heinschel was averaging 250 yards had 11 touchdowns to 5 interceptions, so he isnt replacing a scrub. I think Pitt is undervalued with their QB upgrade to go with their DLine. I wasn’t high on FSU coming into the year, and besides the Bama game they haven’t been anything special. Pitt is a live dog.
NC State +23.5 at Notre Dame
The most underrated QB in the country heads to South Bend this weekend as CJ Bailey and the Wolfpack take on Notre Dame. NC State’s defense isn’t pretty, so I expect Notre Dame to score, but man when this offense clicks, it clicks. Bailey is 5th in the nation in passing yards, and in the top 25 of yardage he has the best completion percentage. Notre Dame looked sharp at Arkansas recently, but Miami, A&M, and Purdue all put up good numbers vs the Irish. NC State is not one dimensional though. Their running back is 3rd in yards! At 100 carries for 693 yards, Hollywood Smothers can move. I just have a hard time envisioning Notre Dame slowing this offense down. Bailey and Smothers will keep moving chains and if they simply get 3 touchdowns 21 points then Notre Dame would have to score 45 for this to lose.
Dolphins +4.5 v Chargers
The Dolphins are bad but more than a field goal dog at home with a team traveling 2500 miles bad, that also dropped two in a row?! The Chargers looked like an elite team early on, but have since flown to NY to lose to the Giants, flew back home to lose to the Commies, and now get on another long flight to Miami. Miami can’t stop the run at all, but the Chargers won’t have Omarion Hampton, or Najee Harris. Outside of week 1 where the ghost of Jim Irsay looked over the Colts, Miami is averaging 25 points a game. It looks like Joe Alt might play this week, but the Chargers OLine is their kryptonite and is holding this team back. That and the 24 penalties the last two weeks are a big reason LA has dropped two in a row, and until I see a more clean game, I will fade the Chargers.
Jaguars +1.5 v Seahawks
Semi homer alert but the 4-1 Jaguars are home dogs, and while Seattle is a strong team, I think this is more a -3 spot equal footing. The Jaguars defense is elite and leads the league with 14 takeaways. 2nd place has 10 and the median is 6. Sam Darnold is playing good ball but he will always be a gunslinger at heart and I look for the Jaguars defense to capitalize. It looks like Jags will get back edge Travon Walker who was extremely missed last week vs the Chiefs. He sets the tone, limiting the run and rushing the quarterback. Him and Josh Hines Allen will speed up things for Darnold and hopefully the secondary capitalizes. Last week felt the week Trevor Lawrence took control of the offense. I cannot defend the two bonehead delay of games, but he was pushing the ball down the field more vertically. Every week, him and Coen learn more about each other, and this will help players like Brian Thomas Jr who’s numbers are starting to rise again. I look for Duval to stay hot!
