I will start my fantasy columns with the same two statements. Know your league rules! Rankings change based on scoring so all my rankings will be half point PPR, 6 points all touchdowns, 10 yards receiving / rushing a point and 25 yards throwing a point. Fantasy Football is not real football! Sometimes opportunities outweigh talent. Also keep in mind roster construction. Do you start 2 or 3 receivers? This might weigh receivers higher in your draft.
Tier 1 are our elite, set and forget, players. If you lock in one of these 10, they aren’t coming out of your lineup except for a bye week. I have CeeDee Lamb at #1 despite no new contract. If CeeDee still isn’t signed and practicing by the time you draft, I’d slide him to #4. Many people have questions on Justin Jefferson with Kirk Cousins’ departure. In Jefferson’s four starts without Kirk, he averaged 19 fantasy points per game. Sam Darnold might throw a lot of interceptions, but he will be slinging it often and to Jefferson. Receivers 5-10 are very talented players, but with talent comes draft capital. Running back is thin, and I imagine I’ll be taking running backs in this range, loading up on Tier 2 and Tier 3 receivers. I’d love a Puka Nacua, he just went 105 catches for 1,492 yards as a rookie! Or, I can take a running back here, and wait on his teammate Cooper Kupp. Too each their own on set up, but that tends to be my style.
Mike Evans, Chris Olave, and Davante Adams would all be in Tier 1 if they had a more reliable quarterback. Still, they have immense talent and will get you a more grinded out high total. It looks like Brandon Aiyuk will remain a 49er. I still would prefer Deebo Samuel because he can manufacture more yards for himself and his coach can scheme him the ball more. Maybe I am overcritical of Brock Purdy but I don’t think he’s the best at pushing the ball downfield, which Aiyuk is used for. I love the idea on waiting on Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith, These WR #2’s on their respected teams have shown good career consistency. Yes, Tyreek Hill and AJ Brown are better receivers, but you can get their counter parts in the 4th round, and if anything happens to Hill or Brown you now have a WR #1 in an electric offense. This allows us to build elsewhere and snag a running back or two, where bell-cow running backs are hard to find.
Sign me up for Malik Nabers. We have a lot going for us here. The Giants lack skill position talent, and we have a team philosophy of really emphasizing the vertical pass. Sure, Daniel Jones might not be the best quarterback, but he’s going to look for Nabers early and often. Christian Kirk is another receiver with a lot going for him. The slot receiver has two new weapons on his outside to really stretch the field and open things up for him. If Gabe Davis and Brian Thomas Jr get respect from other defenses, the middle will be open for Kirk. Three receivers that are in new places, also take the role as WR #2 or even WR #3 on their team. It’s hard to judge Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, and Calvin Ridley. I’m out on Diggs because I’m in on Tank Dell for the Texans, who despite his size just finds the endzone. Nico Collins and Tank Dell are fantastic receivers, and Diggs is coming off a bad year, and is 30 years old. Caleb Williams and Will Levis really like to push the ball down the field. Keenan Allen and Ridley should be great safety blankets for the quarterbacks, but I’m wondering if their risky mentality will have them over looking these route runners for the likes of a more deep threat guy in Rome Odunze or DeAndre Hopkins. Picking the right receivers to win their team’s depth chart battles is a key aspect in building a playoff contending team.
Every team needs a bench. Injuries happen, the season is full of bye weeks, and some times you can flip depth for stars, and have to rely on bench pieces to be flex starters. I’m looking for upside here. Justin Herbert has one hellova arm, and while they might be run based, Josh Palmer and or Ladd McConkey should play a big role. I’ll give the edge to the vet Palmer as he had a 100 target season already. Speaking of a hellova arm, Josh Allen will elevate his receivers. I’m locked in on Curtis Samuel. Samuel had a career year under OC Joe Brady, and I believe he will be the Bills WR #1. Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and unranked Mack Hollins definitely could have an impact. I’ll continue with the theme, looking for vertical quarterbacks and I’ll turn to Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars. Brian Thomas Jr will take the Calvin Ridley role, which Ridley eclipse 1000 yards last season, and Gabe Davis is Mr Boom or Bust, but when you’re throwing darts he’s one good dart who can win you a week. The Packers claim they don’t have a WR #1 and everyone contributes, so Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs should have a steady role. If injury happens, or if one of those two immerge, then they can really pay off as a late round steal. Tier 4 I’m looking to fill my bench with high powered offense receivers.
We have four game changing receivers this year in CeeDee, Ty Hill, Jettas, and Chase. If I cannot land one of them four, I’ll gladly load up on my tier 2 and 3 receivers if my draft flow allows me. The depth of the position is deep and not much separates the good from the average, with the great being positive outliers. On my tail end of the draft I want good quarterback’s throwing the bench receivers the ball. Going wide receiver heavy has been a sexy trend, but when one zig’s I will zag, so targeting running backs is my wave in 2024.
