I will start my fantasy columns with the same two statements. Know your league rules! Rankings change based on scoring so all my rankings will be half point PPR, 6 points all touchdowns, 10 yards receiving / rushing a point and 25 yards throwing a point. I’m also going off of ESPN standard for defense and kicking rankings. Defense is one of the most customizable things in fantasy though, so make sure you read your league rules throughout.
A kicker should be your last pick, maybe 2nd to last if you truly believe in the advantage of a Tucker or someone. Where I differ from most is I truly believe in snagging one or even two stronger defenses, especially if your league isn’t standard. As I mentioned, defense is one of the most customizable things from league to league. Every year about three defenses are a few points ahead of the rest, due to defensive touchdowns being such a game changer. What I’m wondering is how much a game changer this new kickoff will be. Most leagues give a kickoff return to the defense, and if that’s the case, where can I steal three extra touchdowns? If Justice Hill returns for Baltimore, Nyheim Hines for Cleveland, and Tyrone Tracy for the New York Giants, then these defenses can sneak out a few extra touchdowns. Pair that with their great defensive lines and we can be cooking with these 3. I’m intrigued by the Jaguars this year. Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker combined for 27.5 sacks last season, and they add Arik Armstead to that defensive line. New DC Ryan Nielsen is very aggressive with his blitz packages. We might not have the return of “Sacksonville” but look for the Jags to get after the quarterback. Oh, and they signed Devin Duvernay for 4.25 million a year to be their return man on one side and Parker Washington on the other, who nearly broke one against the Chiefs. You don’t get any points unless the return hinds the endzone, but the Jags should accomplish that a few times this season.
