The Masters

Alright. This won’t be my best article, and hopefully it isn’t my worst. Due to time constraints I had to rush this a little. This is due to sheer forgetfulness. I’ve been building my Twitter (@KowalsKorner give it a follow) and making some Twitter Friends along the way! I’ve been researching the Masters plenty and think I have some good angles!

While undocumented, I’ve had three winning weeks in golf, in the last three tournaments! I had no clue how to play the Match Play tourney so I laid off that one though. I also didn’t like the field in last weeks Valero Texas Open so I laid off of that one as well. But, if yall trust me, the last three tourneys I played were:

Arnold Palmer Invitational:

  • Tommy Fleetwood top 10 +300 (hit)
  • Francesco Molinari top 10 +333 (hit)
  • Si Woo Kim top 10 + 550 (miss)
  • Kevin Kisner top 10 +900 (miss)

The Players Championship:

  • Tommy Fleetwood top 10 +300 (hit)
  • Hideki Matsuyama top 10 +300 (hit)
  • Patrick Cantley top 10 +333 (miss)
  • Xander Schauffele top 10 +350 (miss)
  • Gary Woodland top 10 +500 (miss)

Valspar Championship:

  • Jason Kokrak top 10 +400 (hit)
  • Ryan Moore top 10 +450 (miss)
  • Jason Kokrak to win +4000 (miss but came in 2nd!)

I also should note, but yall can see, I like the top10 bets. To win a golf tournament you need skill, luck, and composure. There are so many variables and I just feel the odds to win aren’t worth it value wise. I will be picking a winner though for this week! That being said … GERONIMO here we go! All odds are New Jersey’s DraftKings odds I am currently seeing.

Favorites – The Favorite I like is Justin Rose. At +1200 to win and +125 for a top 10, he has low odds but I still like it. The +125 for a top 10 doesn’t look appealing, but Rose is the world #1 and the most consistent golfer on the Tour. In 13 trips to Augusta he has 5 top 10s! The past five years he’s been t12, 2, t10, t2, t14. When he wasn’t top 10 he was just outside. Rose knows where to hit it in Augusta, which to me equals success. While putting is the most important ingredient, if you know where to hit your approach shots your putting will be easier. Rose has a great chance to be in the top 10, and I really like his chances to win it.

Mid-Tier – Speaking of knowing where to hit it, and putting science in the game, I like Bryson Dechambeau to finish in the top 10 at +300. Bryson doesn’t have the track record like Rose, and only played the Masters twice. In 2016 he was the low Amateur at t21, and last year came in 38th. The reason I think Bryson will get his FIRST top 10 in a MAJOR is his form. Winner of five tournaments in the last year, he rose from 62nd to 6th. I am not a fan of his style, he uses the same length for all his irons and will put with the flagstick in. It is working for him though. There is nobody on the Tour that will use their brain more than him, and it will pay off by outsmarting the field. I also like Tony Finau this week. He is +300 for a top 10 as well. Last year Finau had three top 10s in the four majors, including t10 in the 2018 Masters. Last year Finau snapped his ankle back in to place last year in the Masters, after a hole-in-one in the par 3 contest, and somehow still got t10. His form is nothing to boost about though. In his last seven competitions he has zero top 10s. Finau hits the ball a long way off the tee. He should dominate the four par 5’s at Augusta. That alone should get him in to the top 10. We’ll have to watch out for the big numbers from Finau, but if he avoids bad chips and double bogeys, then I love his chance.

Longshots – The longshot I like this week is Matthew Fitzpatrick at +750 to finish in the top 10. In 2016 it looked like he would burst on to the scene when he finished 7th in the Masters. Statistically, Fitzpatrick is strong from the rough and the sand. The Masters is a test for everyone, and I like that his strong suit is recovery. This should avoid big numbers. He is weak off the tee, but he is fairly accurate. The Masters isn’t that long of a course, but it is super strategic. Fitzpatrick won’t be burnt is he is 30 yards behind the rest off the tee. At +750 I like his value.

Lets Recap!

5u Justin Rose top 10 +125

.5u Justin Rose to win +1200

2.5u Tony Finau top 10 +300

1.5u Bryson Dechambeau top 10 +300

.5u Matthew Fitzpatrick top 10 +750

There was one name missing from my article. Tiger Woods. Let me tell yall, I cried when Tiger won at East Lake last year. As he was walking to the 18th green, and mayhem broke lose with the crowd walking behind him, a tear fell from my eye. I was overwhelmed that he did it again. I unfortunately couldn’t appreciate Tiger’s greatness I was too young. I remember skipping school to see him win the 2008 U.S Open though! I am a HUGE Tiger fan. I have all his video games dating back to Tiger PGA Tour 2003. I am rooting for him so hard this week, but I don’t trust my money on it. I don’t feel his form is what is was late last year. Tiger can compete, but I am not too confident in it. There is nothing more I want to see then a Tiger victory, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes something like 24th this weekend. He will get a top 5 in a Major this season, and that can be his victory, but I don’t think it’ll be this weekend. On Sunday I will be wearing red and believing though. Go Tiger.

Best of luck to all! And let me know what you think!

Thank you,

Goose
